APN Role Description

This professional development plan is designed to lead an APN through the attainment of national certification, while also recognizing and adhering to local, state, and federal mandates for continuing education. These include but are not limited to: mandated clinical practice hours, maintaining current skills in CPR & Infection Control, NCLEX-RN test administration, and meeting or exceeding the Competency Education Process for Advanced Practice Nurses (CEPAPN).

The CEPAPN requires that all advanced practice nurses maintain competence in clinical knowledge, professional skills, decision making skills, interdisciplinary collaboration abilities, leadership skills, interpersonal/communication skills and other attributes needed to achieve excellence in the profession. This can be achieved through the successful completion of 1-year curriculums, which integrate didactic and clinical practice experiences. APNs must also demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of areas such as: current pharmacology, critical care management, assessment skills and other therapeutic modalities.

APNs will begin this process by completing 1 year of required courses with a concentration in either adult or family psychiatric mental health nursing (CMHC).

The APN must complete 18 hours of annual continuing education credit, 4 of which are specific to the role.

The APN is required to earn 6 points in addition to completing NCLEX-RN for retention and/or recertification every 2 years. APNs are also required to complete continuing education courses in accordance with the role description, as well as maintaining retention of CPR & Infection control skills.

The APN possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to provide role-specific practice within a professional framework of caring. The Advanced Practice Nurse is accountable for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, patient education/counseling, documentation, and appropriate referrals in accordance with licensure and regulatory standards. In addition to expertise in the practice domain, APNs possess a broad range of complementary knowledge across key content areas including assessment and diagnosis; interdisciplinary collaboration; evidence-based practice; health promotion and maintenance; therapeutic intervention; patient education/counseling.

6: coordinating the plan of care for clients/families across healthcare settings including home, school or community and across the continuum of care;

7: participating in interdisciplinary professional development activities and maintain current knowledge and skills.

Objectives of APN professional development plan :

The goal of APN professional development plan is to ensure that the APN graduate is able to achieve advanced practice competencies as defined by the national certifying body and consistent with local, state and federal regulations.
