The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 under the Obama Administration. This plan offered many benefits to Americans who were struggling to afford or find health care coverage due to pre-existing conditions (Silberman, 2020). The plan also provided incentives to medial facilities to promote the best care possible and to strive to reduce re-admission rates. There were multiple other provisions put into place to increase access to care and the health insurance marketplace was created to assist individuals in finding affordable healthcare coverage (Silberman, 2020). President Trump had vowed to replace the Affordable Care Act and it was one of his most sought-after goals. He was not able to achieve this as he was not re-elected in 2020. Repealing the ACA would have a negative affect on citizens of our country. As with any issue there are people on both sides of the fence. Hello Katrina, I have reviewed your work and I agree that politicians give priority to the issues that will benefit them and not those that will favor the health of the population in general. In this sense, politicians have been promoting laws and regulations that restrict the ethical standards of health care according to Taylor et al (2017). They generally do what it takes to get elected as legislators because opposing a particular idea can cost them their seats, especially if the issue or idea is supported by the party they are running for.
Following what was previously expressed, I consider that political interference in the health sector can negatively affect the results of many implemented programs, particularly in nursing. That is why it is highly recommended that nursing professionals participate in activities related to the country’s politics as this allows them to present the problems of nurses in the legislature (Milstead & Short, 2019). In this way, they would have the possibility to advocate for policies that can be better adapted to the health system.
An example of how the population could be affected by political interference in the health sector has been the attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act policy during the Trump administration. Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them.
