Discussion: Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 under the Obama Administration. This plan offered many benefits to Americans who were struggling to afford or find health care coverage due to pre-existing conditions (Silberman, 2020). The plan also provided incentives to medial facilities to promote the best care possible and to strive to reduce re-admission rates. There were multiple other provisions put into place to increase access to care and the health insurance marketplace was created to assist individuals in finding affordable healthcare coverage (Silberman, 2020). President Trump had vowed to replace the Affordable Care Act and it was one of his most sought-after goals. He was not able to achieve this as he was not re-elected in 2020. There are many different factors that come into play when prioritizing legislation and one of those factors is upcoming elections Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Discussion Essay.

As unfortunate as it is politicians place priority on issues, they feel is going to help them continue to be re-elected (Milstead & Short, 2019). Politics is based on strategy to attempt to keep their seats within government (Milstead & Short, 2019). If a politician feels that an opposing view to an issue would harm their efforts to be re-elected, they often will be either silent related to the issue or actively campaign against it (Milstead & Short, 2019). It is important for nurses to become involved in politics in order to bring nursing issues to the forefront of the legislative discussions. Building relationships with local legislature works for both the nurses advocating for change but also the legislative members who listen to them and begin working towards making those changes a reality (Milstead & Short, 2019). If legislatures feel that supporting nursing cause at the government level will assist in achieving re-election than they are going to support that cause (Milstead & Short, 2019) Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Discussion Essay.

Repealing the ACA would have a negative affect on citizens of our country. As with any issue there are people on both sides of the fence. The idea of repealing the ACA was popular among most Conservatives. Conservatives believe in less government and more freedom for Americans to govern themselves and make their own decisions (Patashnik & Oberlander, 2018). The mandate to obtain health insurance was wildly unpopular among the Conservative party for that reason (Patashnik & Oberlander, 2018). Whereas Democrats believe in more government and more government programs. No matter who the candidate is they will often do their best to pander to their constituents. Unfortunately, this does not always mean that the politician will keep their campaign promises either. Positions among politicians often change depending upon their need for re-election and their need to grow their voting base.

Hello Katrina, I have reviewed your work and I agree that politicians give priority to the issues that will benefit them and not those that will favor the health of the population in general. In this sense, politicians have been promoting laws and regulations that restrict the ethical standards of health care according to Taylor et al (2017). They generally do what it takes to get elected as legislators because opposing a particular idea can cost them their seats, especially if the issue or idea is supported by the party they are running for.

Following what was previously expressed, I consider that political interference in the health sector can negatively affect the results of many implemented programs, particularly in nursing. That is why it is highly recommended that nursing professionals participate in activities related to the country’s politics as this allows them to present the problems of nurses in the legislature (Milstead & Short, 2019). In this way, they would have the possibility to advocate for policies that can be better adapted to the health system.

An example of how the population could be affected by political interference in the health sector has been the attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act policy during the Trump administration. If Obamacare were eliminated, the negative effects on the health care system would be evident, for example, the number of citizens without health insurance would increase, particularly the elderly and disabled, and on the other hand, people with pre-existing conditions and low-income citizens. they would be forced to pay for drugs and medical services that would be very expensive Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Discussion Essay.

Discussion: Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them. The realm of healthcare is no different. Some people feel that local, state, and federal policies and legislation can be either helped or hindered by interests other than the benefit to society.

Consider for example that the number one job of a legislator is to be reelected. Cost can be measured in votes as well as dollars. Thus, it is important to consider the legislator’s perspective on either promoting or not promoting a certain initiative in the political landscape.
