NURS 3100 3101 Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession

NURS 3100 3101 Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession
Discussion – Week 2
For our second discussion, I went with option two, “Fitzpatrick (2015) describes how certain characteristics and competencies set nursing and nurses apart from other professions and practitioners. Describe how your nursing practice and ethical decision-making skills have furthered the quality and safety of patient care.”

Nursing is like an art to me. To be able to empathize with a stranger and show them that you only want the best for them is no easy task. Nurses must get to know their patients better than any other healthcare worker. We must learn about the patient’s values and what their life may look like outside of the healthcare system. Patients may face challenges after being hospitalized, and as nurses, it’s our job to advocate for the patient so they can continue to progress (Fitzpatrick, 2015). During these difficult times, when the family cannot be present, it is even more important to communicate with the patient and family to provide safe, individualized care. Without the support of family, nurses are also there to comfort the patient during what may be one of the most challenging times in their life. By using our knowledge and passion for caring, patients may look back on these hard times and feel grateful that a nurse was there to help them through.

In today’s world, nurses cannot escape technology. While technology does help provide safer care, it can get in the way of the most fundamental parts of nursing care. Sometimes we get so caught up in the charting that we can forget the essential role of nursing (Fitzpatrick, 2015). As a new nurse, I was continually going directly to a computer as I entered a patient’s room. I observed a veteran nurse during one of my shifts, and I notice that she did not log into the computer unless necessary. NURS 3100 3101 Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession. I also saw that she was able to gain far more information on her patients by asking them questions rather than continually referring to their chart. I could also tell that the patient felt like the nurse could fully engage with the care, and it was more personal. After this observation, I made a promise to myself that I would go to my patient first when entering the room before even touching a computer and only login while in a patient’s room when necessary. Following this change in my practice, I notice higher patient satisfaction, and I was better able to focus on my assessments to pick up on any new changes. Through this simple change, I also rediscovered my passion for providing holistic patient care. NURS 3100 3101 Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession

Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession

Nurses are the most honest and ethical professionals in America, according to Gallup polls for more than 12 years in a row. In 2014, 80 percent of Americans said that nurses have “very high” or “high” standards of honesty and ethics, compared with 7% and 8% ratings, respectively, for members of Congress and salespeople. According to Pamela Cipiriano, President of the 35th American Nurses Association (ANA) (2015, March 01), “The public places its faith in nurses to practice ethically.”

A patient’s health, autonomy, and even life or death can be affected by a nurse’s decisions and actions. The IOM’s recommendation to increase the role of nursing in both present and future health care practice underscores the nexus between the decisions and actions of nurses and the health and outcomes of the patients cared for by nurses.

The critical role of nurses in present and future health care makes it imperative that nurses be knowledgeable about the ANA’s Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements (2015) (the “Code”). As the cornerstone document of the nursing profession, the Code reflects the evolution of health care and considers the most current ethical challenges nurses face in practice. The Codeupholds the best interests of patients, families, and communities. NURS 3100 3101 Discussion: The Most Trusted Profession
