Consider the following patient scenario:

A mother comes in with 9-month-old girl. The infant is 68.5cm in length (25th percentile per CDC growth chart), weighs 6.75kg (5th percentile per CDC growth chart), and has a head circumference of 43cm (25th percentile per CDC growth chart).

Describe the developmental markers a nurse should assess for a 9-month-old female infant. Discuss the recommendations you would give the mother. Explain why these recommendations are based on evidence-based practice.

Developmental markers for a 9 -month- old infant include; Social and Emotional: may be afraid of strangers, may be clingy with familiar adults, has favorite toys. Language/Communication: understands “no”, makes a lot of different sounds like “mama” and “baba”, copies sounds and gestures of others, and uses fingers to point at things. Cognitive: watches the path of something as it falls, looks for things she sees you hide, plays peek-a-boo, puts things in his mouth, can move things smoothly from one hand to the other, picks up things between thumb and index finger. With the information provided regarding a 9 – month -old female infant, the 25th percentile of height and weight for age is on the low end of the spectrum but still may be appropriate for this infant. The head circumference is concerning at the 5th percentile. Based on this information questions to the caregiver would relate to how the baby is feeding. Has the caregiver introduced pureed foods one at a time such as fruits and vegetables? Is the baby breast-feeding and if so, is the mother producing adequate milk? Is the baby latching? Have you introduced finger foods? Also included in the interview would be any family stressors on the primary caregiver to assess for adaptation problems (CDCb, 2018).

Evidenced based practice for infant nutrition recommends exclusive breast feeding to the age of 6months and then introducing complementary foods such as infant cereals, fruits and vegetables. Finger foods may also be introduced. Teaching the caregiver proper techniques for breastfeeding or the need to feed the baby breast milk from a bottle may be required. In addition to proper feeding, care of the supplies for feeding such as, breast pumps and bottles should be included. Vitamin D and iron supplements are typically required for infants and should be introduced.
