Assessment of Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Borderline Personality Disorders

Personality disorders

Personality assessment entails the use specific tools and techniques to determine a person’s personality. It is employed in the diagnosis of psychological derangements.  Narcissistic personality disorder is defined by presence of grandiose fantasies coupled to mental and physiological comorbidities.  Interview should seek to elicit the pathognomic traits of overinflated ego and fantasies of grandiosity (Kacel, 2017). This is elicited using various questionnaires such as the personality diagnostic questionnaire- (PDQ-4) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI); which assess patients’ cognition, attitudes and behavior. A comprehensive personality assessment examines attitudes and behavior through patient interviews. Additionally, projection tests such as The Rorschach Inkblot Tests are coupled to self-report inventories such as MMPI for a diagnosis to be made following the (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders- fifth edition) DSM-V manual (Zimmerman, 2019). These provide the clinical profile as well as a complete examination of the patient’s unconscious challenges, desires, and fears.

Borderline personality is identified based on the presenting symptoms and their contexts. During the interview, the clinician seeks to elicit specific signs and symptoms which fall under the following categories; cognitive, affectivity, impulse control and interpersonal functioning (Biskin, 2012) Narcissistic vs Borderline Personality Disorders essay.  According to DSM-5, a diagnosis is made only if the subject displays five or more of the specific criteria outlined.
