Finding the right way to encourage the patient seems to be key. Once they show an interest and willingness then we must take advantage of the time we have to educate.

comment from post 6

The patient’s willingness to learn is sometimes suboptimal. I have had the experience of patients not wanting to put in the work or just don’t seem to really care about their health. This is the hardest thing to measure because you can set goals that are never reached by the patient. I find in these situations that patient care takes a lot more time and attention. Finding the right way to encourage the patient seems to be key. Once they show an interest and willingness then we must take advantage of the time we have to educate.

Once the patient is open to education then we must reinforce the measurable outcomes and goals to the patient. Health education facilitates positive actions to help promote the healthiest patient possible (Edelman, 2014). The measurable outcomes will still be the same for these type of patients and we have to work harder to get them to understand the importance of healthy goals. This is an ongoing process with these kind of patients but as long as we can help the patient to the best of our ability then we will be doing what is right for the patient.
