Big Data Risks and Rewards

Many healthcare organizations struggle with sorting and analyzing data. Big data is defined as large data sets that are more relevant when analyzed as a fully integrated data set instead of smaller data sets (Keenan, 2014). A lack of standardized data can lead to the inability to evaluate an organization’s performance or make changes (Thew, 2016). Big data provides many benefits and risks Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

Benefits

The use of effective big data can improve patient experiences and organization performance (Wang et al., 2018). The use of the system provides benefits for various departments. The systems impacted include the technological, operational, managerial, strategic, and organizational (Wang et al., 2018). A large benefit would be the reduction in cost. This is achieved in multiple ways. When data is analyzed appropriately cost saving changes can be made after interpreting data. For example, our supply rooms are monitored and stocked as needed. If after an extended period it was determined that certain supplies are not used as often, these could be purchased just when necessary, or in smaller quantities. This prevents an overabundance of stock and unnecessary expenses. It can also be used to analyze the electronic health record. Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay When an organization is struggling with an issue such as falls, this system can analyze various factors to determine patterns of care (Wang et al., 2018). This information can then be used to determine what can be changed to prevent falls, and what other units are doing that creates a lower rate of falls. If the organization is successful in lowering the number of falls, this leads to a decrease in cost directly linked from the use of big data in the clinical system. Not only are costs impacted, but also quality of care. The incorporation of big data can be directly linked to many benefits Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

Risks

With any new system implementation there are risks. The largest risk is the possibility of breach in confidentially of private health information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017, p. 491). The patient’s privacy could be impacted due to a third party becoming involved (Wang et al., 2018). Organizations are not able to directly control the privacy of big data companies. This is one risk that could greatly jeopardize protected health information. One phishing attack resulted in 80,000 medical records being released (Lv & Qiao, 2020) Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay. Organizations must do all they can to prevent breaches in confidentiality. Breaches in confidentiality can lead to lack of trust, lawsuits, and incredibility.

Combating Risks

One strategy my organization utilizes is education. Staff are educated about phishing, and how to respond. Staff receive reminder emails about what phishing looks like. This creates an awareness and will hopefully prevent staff from becoming victims of phishing scams. They are also educated on protecting patients’ private health information. This education is provided yearly to remind staff of acceptable times patients’ information may be exchanged Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

Conclusion

The use of big data within a clinical system can have multiple benefits for the organization, patients, and staff. With the implementation of any new system, new risks are imposed. The greatest risk to the incorporation of this system includes breach in confidentiality. This risk is currently combatted in many organizations with the use of education. The addition of big data has the potential to greatly impact an organization both positively and negatively.

Discussion: Big Data Risks and Rewards

When you wake in the morning, you may reach for your cell phone to reply to a few text or email messages that you missed overnight. On your drive to work, you may stop to refuel your car. Upon your arrival, you might swipe a key card at the door to gain entrance to the facility. And before finally reaching your workstation, you may stop by the cafeteria to purchase a coffee. Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay

From the moment you wake, you are in fact a data-generation machine. Each use of your phone, every transaction you make using a debit or credit card, even your entrance to your place of work, creates data. It begs the question: How much data do you generate each day? Many studies have been conducted on this, and the numbers are staggering: Estimates suggest that nearly 1 million bytes of data are generated every second for every person on earth Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

As the volume of data increases, information professionals have looked for ways to use big data—large, complex sets of data that require specialized approaches to use effectively. Big data has the potential for significant rewards—and significant risks—to healthcare. In this Discussion, you will consider these risks and rewards Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

The rapidly expanding field of big data analytics has started to play a pivotal role in the evolution of healthcare practices and research. It has provided tools to accumulate, manage, analyze, and assimilate large volume of disparate, structured, and unstructured data produces by current healthcare systems (Belle A, 2015). Data analytics is arguably the most significant revolution in healthcare for the past decade. The 21st century is an era of big data involving all aspects of human life particularly in the healthcare industry. Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay What is big data? The concept of big data is not new, however the way it is defined is constantly changing. Big data refers to a large complex data set that yields substantially more information when analyzed as a fully integrated data set as compared to the outputs achieved with smaller sets of the same data that are not integrated (Keenan, 2014). A report by McKinsey Global Institute suggests that if the US healthcare were to use data creatively, the sector could create more than $300 billion in value every year. Two-thirds of the value would be in the form of reducing US healthcare expenditure (Belle A, 2015). Healthcare organizations continue to struggle to gain the benefits from their investments on big data analytics and some of them are skeptical about its power, although they invest in big data analytics in hope for healthcare transformation. Evidence shows that only 42% of healthcare organizations surveyed are adopting rigorous analytics approaches to support their decision-making process; only 165 of them have substantial experience using analytics across a broad range of functions(Wang et all, 2018).  The laureate education video 2018 stated” big data analytics can translate into improved experience, avoidance of preventable deaths, effective surveillance and educated decision making process”. Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay Data analytics is so important for the healthcare system. With the emergence of machine Learning and analytics tools that can make useful inferences and predictions based on available data. Computing and cloud infrastructure that allows for large quantities of data processing in real time pushed to the right operational and clinical decision makers at the right time (Linkedin.com).

An electronic health record (EHR) is a digital version of a patient’s chart. Electronic health records are real-time, patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users. While an electronic health record does contain the medical and treatment histories of patients, an electronic health record system is built to go beyond standard clinical data collected in a provider’s office and can be inclusive of a broader view of a patient’s care. An electronic health record contains a patient’s medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates, allergies, and laboratory and test results. An electronic health record allows access to evidence-based tools that providers can use to make decisions about a patient’s care (www.healthit. Gov). The U.S. Joint Commission states that” As health information technology (HIT) and converging technologies – the interrelationship between medical devices and HIT- are increasingly adopted by health care organizations, users must be mindful of the safety risks and preventable adverse events that these implementations can create or perpetuate. Technology-related adverse events can be associated with all components of a comprehensive technology system and may involve errors of either commission or omission. These unintended adverse events typically stem from human-machine interfaces or organization/system design (USA Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization, 2008). With the human-machine interactions, there is also the risk for privacy breaches that could allow sensitive health care information to fall into the wrong hands (Kierkegaard P, 2012).  Threats to health care information can be categorized under these three headings:

-Human threats, such as employees or hackers

-Natural and environmental threats, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and fires

-Technology failures, such as a system crashing Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

Healthcare organizations must take all the necessary steps to protect patient’s private information. It is essential to implement rigorous data rules and control mechanisms for highly sensitive clinical data to prevent security breaches and protect patient privacy (Wang et all, 2018).

In summary, I can conclude that big data analytics is going to play an important role in the health care industry. The implementation of big data analytics can bring multiple benefits for the organizations. Big data analytics holds the potential to change healthcare delivery for the better (Thew, 2016). During the coronavirus pandemic we see the benefits of big data analytics in healthcare. It has informed public policy by helping us better measure critical activities to manage the crisis.  Big Data Risks and Rewards EssayHealthcare analytics supported supply chain management, policy regarding mitigation strategies as well as measuring spread rates, death rate, health outcomes of populations by region, age and ethnicity. As time goes on, the use of big data analytics in healthcare will continue to be used in a variety of ways to improve patient outcomes and resource management (Foreseemed.com)

Response

I appreciated reading your post, I agree that Electronic Health Records (EHR) as part of big data it is the responsibility of the healthcare system to secure patient information. According to McGonigle and Mastrian, as many as 77 persons could view patient’s record during a hospital stay. More data means more knowledge, greater insights, smarter ideas and expand opportunities for organizations to harness and learn from their data (McGonigle and Mastrian, 2017). Healthcare the practice is gearing to the use of technology and as nurses, we should be able to keep up with the demand and appreciate the use of data. Research indicates that big data use increases earlier diagnosis and the effectiveness and quality of treatments by the discovery of early signals and disease intervention, reduced probability of adverse reactions, widening possibilities for prevention of diseases by identification of risk factors for disease, improvement of pharmacovigilance and patient safety through the ability to make more informed medical decisions based on directly delivered information to the patients and prediction of outcomes (Pastorino, 2019) Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.

According to Thew 2016, Big data “typically refers to a large complex data set that yields substantially more information when analyzed as a fully integrated data set as compared to the outputs achieved with smaller sets of the same data that are not integrated,”(Thew, 2016) Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay.
